October 12–18: Fear eases while capital flows remain weak
The Smart Money Fear & Greed Index moves from fear back to neutral this week. Its 7-day average initially falls from a rounded 42 on Monday to 31 on Wednesday, before reaching 52 on Sunday. This report fixes the data snapshot at October 18, 2026, 13:40 UTC. Sunday is still in progress, so its index reading and Bitcoin price are provisional.
How the index changed
The displayed index gains 10 points from the start of the week to the current snapshot. The path matters: Tuesday records 33 and Wednesday 31, followed by 35 on Thursday, 42 on Friday and 49 on Saturday. The smoothed measure only returns to the neutral range of 45 to 54 on Saturday.
The unsmoothed daily value responds faster. It is already around 69 on Thursday and 76 on Friday, while the 7-day average still indicates fear. The large number on the index page therefore describes positioning over several days. It does not represent just one trading day's sentiment.
Funding strengthens while capital flows disagree
At the Sunday snapshot, funding scores 83 out of 100, up 40 points from seven days earlier. The observed funding rate is approximately 0.0072 percent per eight hours. Long positions are paying for their positioning at this reading, which indicates risk appetite but does not prove additional spot buying.
The seven-day change in open interest is minus 0.2 percent. Stablecoin supply is down 0.68 percent over 30 days, while the recorded ETF flows total approximately minus 228 million US dollars over five trading days. The latest available ETF trading day is October 16; the closed weekend is not treated as a new trading day.
Bitcoin's price does not confirm a broad recovery
In the saved price series, Bitcoin closes October 12 at approximately 81,813 US dollars. The Sunday snapshot is approximately 81,381 US dollars, about 0.5 percent lower. The positioning index's recovery is therefore not accompanied by a comparable price increase within this observation window.
These readings show measured fear easing alongside weak capital-flow measures. They do not establish a reliable price direction. High funding combined with subdued open interest deserves separate attention because the overall index compresses those differences into one number.
What matters for the next weekly comparison
The next report should examine whether the return to neutral persists and whether ETF flows and stablecoin supply begin to support the change in futures positioning. Agreement across several components would strengthen that interpretation. It would still not establish a specific price forecast.
Historical daily readings come from the index series available at the stated snapshot time.
