Bitcoin Funding and Open Interest Explained

Funding and open interest describe two different features of Bitcoin futures: recurring payments between longs and shorts, and the amount of contracts that remain open. Together they help explain positioning, but they cannot establish the next price direction on their own.

What is the funding rate?

Perpetual futures use recurring funding payments between long and short positions to help keep the contract price close to spot. With positive funding, longs generally pay shorts; with negative funding, shorts pay longs. The calculation and payment interval depend on the contract.

Compare rates over the same interval. An hourly rate cannot be compared directly with an eight-hour rate. High positive funding can indicate expensive long exposure. It does not establish that there are more long contracts than short contracts, or that Bitcoin is about to fall.

What is open interest?

Open interest is the amount of derivatives contracts still outstanding. Every contract has both a long and a short side. Trading volume instead measures activity over a period. The same exposure can change hands repeatedly without an equivalent increase in outstanding contracts.

Units matter. Open interest may be expressed in contracts, Bitcoin or dollar notional value. A dollar figure can increase simply because Bitcoin's price rises. A change in open interest therefore does not directly measure newly deposited money or the total margin backing positions.

What the combination tells you

If outstanding contracts increase while positive funding rises, additional exposure and higher recurring costs for longs may be building together. Those two observations alone do not reveal whether the positions are speculative, hedged or part of other strategies.

Falling open interest may reflect positions being closed. If the measure is in dollars, changes in Bitcoin's price matter too. Comparing it with price, volume and liquidations helps distinguish ordinary position reduction from periods with many forced closures. That comparison still describes observed conditions rather than a guaranteed next move.

Their role in the Fear & Greed Index

Funding and the seven-day change in open interest are separate components of the Smart Money Fear & Greed Index. Their component scores place readings in the context of their own historical ranges. The main overall number is then displayed as a 7-day average.

When reading Bitcoin fear and greed alongside funding and open interest, check the timestamp, units and direction of change. A high component score or overall index reading is not a probability for the next price move. The index page lets you compare both components with the other measured market conditions.
